3 Social Media Guidelines That Will Make You Stand Out
Contrary to popular belief being part of the crowd will not make you popular. Especially when it comes to business. These 3 social media guidelines will make sure you stand out and attract attention. After all, nobody will hear you if they don’t first notice you.
Imagine you’re walking down a city street. Lots of people. Everyone is dressed exactly the same. Everyone has a cellphone to their ear with eyes cast where they are walking. Suddenly a lady appears all dressed in red, wearing a gigantic hat and she’s singing at the top of her voice. Do you think everyone else’s eyes will remain on the ground? Oh no, she now has their attention.
Now, I’m not suggesting posting pictures of yourself in a red dress wearing a large hat. If you do, here’s a little tip: high heels are really hard to walk in. Find some sensible shoes at least!
Kidding aside that is, in essence, what you want to do. You want to get noticed. It only makes sense, if everyone is saying the same thing you want to say something different. So, here are the 3 social media guidelines to get you noticed:
1) Educate People
There is a fantastic course called Magnetic Sponsoring by Mike Dillard in which he talks about how to sell a drill. If you have never read his course, I highly recommend picking up a copy, or at least watching the free 7 videos. In it he says that the fastest way to sell a drill is to teach people how to make a hole. I can’t tell you how mind blowing this was to me. Doesn’t it just make sense? Why would anyone be looking for a drill? Well, they’re not! They are actually looking to make a hole! Somewhere along the line someone taught them that the easiest way to make a hole is with a drill. Isn’t it funny how the simple things in life are really the most profound?
Tell me you don’t love ‘aha moments’. Everyone loves those moments. It’s a fact that most people would rather learn than do. But what if you have nothing to teach? First, let me assure you that you have a lot to teach. But what if that day you are just not in the mood? You’re just not flowing. What then? Pop out a quote! We all love quotes. Something about those two little lines just lend a feeling of importance. What they said is being quoted. It must be important! (Just, always remember to give credit when credit is due.)
2) Be Yourself
Whether you know it or not, people want to know you. Relationship building is the biggest step in creating a successful business. Why do you think companies spend so much time branding themselves and not their products? When I think of computers I don’t think about the Dimension 4600 or the XPS 50000 Ultra, I think of Dell. When I think of syrup I think of Mrs. Butterworth. You see where I’m going here?
People really are interested in you. They need to know that you are a real person. They want to connect with you, to feel like you are their friend. What’s really interesting is you never have to befriend them to give that feeling. The perception is what matters. When they perceive you as a real person, when what you are experiencing resonates with them, an instant bond is created. So, be yourself and be real.
3) Create Some Interaction
This is the last and possibly the most important part of these 3 social media guidelines. Most people like to feel that they contributed something. Whether that be answering a question, voting in a poll or sharing something of theirs. When you create interaction between people you are no longer in the social media, you ARE the social media. A nexus of activity forms around you and you will be remembered.
Perhaps I should have titled this 4 social media guidelines because there is one more thing to keep in mind. Thomas Kempis wrote, “Out of sight, out of mind.” If you are involved in a social media site then participate. The more people see you, the more they will trust and identify with you. I heard somewhere that before a person buys anything they need to be exposed at least 7 times to that product. Same goes with you as a person.
So, I hope these simple social media guidelines have helped you. Just remember, add some value, be yourself and interact. In no time you will find yourself at the hub of the social media party.
